Siam Legal International, a full-service law firm with more than 22 years of experience assisting foreign nationals in Thailand, is warning the public to exercise extreme caution following the emergence of sophisticated AI-generated investment scams that use deepfake technology and fake news websites to defraud victims in Thailand.

Scammers have been operating through Facebook advertisements, deploying advanced AI software to fabricate images and video content impersonating well-known public figures. In one documented case, scammers created highly realistic deepfakes depicting a fabricated confrontation between Suthichai Yoon, a prominent Thai journalist, and Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, the former Governor of the Bank of Thailand. The fabricated content falsely claimed that the former governor had walked out of a live television interview after the journalist exposed an AI-powered investment platform. AI detection software identified a 99.8% probability that the images used in the advertisements were AI-generated, and further investigation confirmed that no such confrontation or discussion of any investment platform had taken place between the two individuals.

Victims are redirected from the fake content to fraudulent websites designed to replicate the appearance of legitimate news outlets including the Bangkok Post. These sites promote a fictitious trading platform called Flux Vexaris, promising monthly returns of at least 250,000 baht with no risk in exchange for an initial deposit of 6,500 baht. The scheme applies pressure through artificial deadlines and limited-time offers, prompting victims to register their personal details including name, email address, and phone number before receiving a call from a fabricated personal advisor instructing them to deliver the required funds. Information shared with these operators has been linked to illegal call center operations and other criminal activities, compounding the harm to victims beyond the immediate financial loss.

"These schemes are becoming significantly harder to identify because the technology used to create them is now accessible and convincing enough to deceive even cautious individuals," said Kittisak Sriparesri, Attorney at Law at Siam Legal International. "The use of deepfake video and cloned news websites to impersonate trusted journalists and financial figures represents a serious escalation in the sophistication of online fraud targeting residents in Thailand. Anyone who encounters an investment opportunity promoted through social media, regardless of how credible the source appears, should verify the information independently before taking any action."

Siam Legal International advises the public to check website URLs carefully as fraudulent pages cannot replicate a legitimate news organization's actual domain and typically use unusual combinations of words and numbers. Any investment scheme promising guaranteed high returns in exchange for an upfront deposit should be treated as a warning sign regardless of how the opportunity is presented. Public figures named in controversial financial stories should be verified through legitimate news sources before any credibility is extended to the claims being made.

Victims of AI-powered investment fraud are advised to file a report with the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center by dialing 1441, contact their bank immediately to freeze their account, and seek guidance from Siam Legal's cybercrime team for legal action. Falling victim to these schemes can result in permanent financial loss as well as exposure of personal data to criminal networks.
