The Glam House Nashville, a permanent makeup studio rated 4.7 stars across 55 Google reviews, is advising Nashville clients to have their skin type assessed before booking microblading, because oily skin can blur hair-stroke brows within months.
The advice addresses one of the most common sources of disappointment in semi-permanent brow work: hair-stroke tattooing placed on skin that cannot hold it. Microblading deposits pigment 0.08 to 0.15 millimeters into the upper dermis in fine, blade-drawn strokes. On oily skin with faster cell turnover, those individual strokes can spread and soften long before the pigment itself fades, leaving a shaded look the client never asked for. Owner Ashley Mooney said skin assessment is built into the consultation at the studio, at 1505 54th Ave North in the Nations neighborhood of West Nashville, which draws clients from East Nashville, Midtown, Downtown and surrounding communities.
"Every consultation starts with skin," said Mooney, a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of The Glam House Nashville. "The approach focuses on matching technique and pigment undertone to how a client's skin actually behaves, so healed brows still look like theirs."
Mooney said clients regularly arrive with a saved photo of hair-stroke brows on skin nothing like their own. Each of the three main techniques behaves differently. Microblading suits clients with some existing brow hair and normal to dry skin, since the crisp strokes read as individual hairs. Powder ombré, applied as thin dots of pigment with a machine, tends to retain better on oily skin and covers sparse areas more evenly. Combination brows pair strokes at the front with shading through the arch and tail. When a client's skin makes microblading unlikely to hold, Mooney said the studio recommends one of the other two rather than proceeding.
Color follows the same logic. Warm undertones are typically matched with pigments carrying auburn or golden notes, while cooler undertones are matched with ashier tones that resist the reddish shift many clients notice a year or two in. That shift is a function of chemistry, not workmanship: facial permanent makeup pigments are iron oxide based and designed to fade, while carbon-based traditional tattoo inks can migrate toward blue or green tones on the face.
Timelines matter as much as technique. Healed color settles roughly 30% to 40% lighter than it looks on the day of the appointment, over four to six weeks, and a touch-up at six to eight weeks corrects uneven retention. Results generally hold one to three years depending on skin type, sun exposure and use of exfoliating skincare products. Appointments run two to three hours, with the first stretch spent mapping the brow against a client's facial proportions and natural brow position, adjusting the outline until the client approves it before any pigment is deposited. Consultations also cover medical history and contraindications, and the studio patch tests clients who report sensitive skin or pigment allergies.
"Correction work is part of this job now," Mooney said. "When previous pigment has turned red or gray, the plan starts with an honest assessment of what the skin can carry before anything else gets scheduled."
