With Sydney Water bills climbing and much of the city's pipe network ageing, Jetstar Plumbing is urging property owners to check and renew ageing sewer and stormwater pipes before they fail. The Sydney-wide plumber of more than 20 years has put sewer and stormwater renewals at the centre of its service, using no-dig pipe relining to renew tired pipes without digging up the yard.
Water and wastewater bills across Greater Sydney rose about 14 per cent in 2025-26 — a typical household bill increased from around $1,220 to $1,388 — and are set to keep rising each year, reaching roughly $1,695 by 2029-30, according to the pricing determination set by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART). Sydney Water has said the additional revenue is going towards upgrading an ageing pipe network.
While the water authority maintains the mains in the street, the pipes on private land — from the house to the connection point — are the property owner's responsibility. When one of those cracks or collapses, the repair cost falls to the owner, not Sydney Water. Sydney Water has highlighted the potential expense, pointing to one resident who reported a $16,000 bill after wastewater pipes failed.
Dry spells are a common trigger. When the ground dries out, tree roots search for moisture and find their way into the small cracks and joints of old clay sewer and stormwater pipes — the kind still in use across many older Sydney suburbs. Heavy rain brings the opposite problem: a cracked or blocked stormwater line can send water where it should not go.
Jetstar's renewal work starts with a CCTV drain camera inspection to locate cracks, root intrusion and collapsed sections. Where the pipe allows, the team renews it with no-dig pipe relining — a trenchless method that forms a new pipe inside the old one, so the work can often be completed without excavating gardens, driveways or slabs. High-pressure water jetting clears roots and debris first. Pipes too damaged to reline are replaced, and every job is completed to Sydney Water requirements, with a Certificate of Compliance issued where one is required.
