Ezhou-At 10:58 AM Beijing time on November 29, syrup-based pharmaceutical products from Italy and France arrived in Ezhou, a city in central China, via all-cargo aircraft. The shipment cleared customs at Ezhou Huahu International Airport and entered the Chinese market, marking the airport's first import of pharmaceutical products.
China is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical importers. From January to October 2024, China imported pharmaceutical preparations worth approximately 18.49 billion USD (about 131.3 billion RMB). This year, the Chinese government has proposed policies to support the opening up and cooperation of the pharmaceutical industry, promote the simultaneous research and development, registration, review, and market launch of global medicines in China, strengthen support for pharmaceutical import and export trade, accelerate the approval of newly launched foreign drugs in China, and encourage multinational companies to transfer the production of original chemical medicines, biologics, and high-end medical equipment to China.
As the world’s fourth-largest, Asia’s largest, and China’s only professional cargo airport—Ezhou Huahu International Airport—it boasts a global network of cargo flight routes. With the opening of pharmaceutical import ports, more medicines from around the world will have easier access to the Chinese market. This will also promote international cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry, accelerate China’s integration into the global pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing system, and attract domestic and foreign pharmaceutical companies to establish regional headquarters or branches in China. At the same time, Chinese consumers will have more convenient access to imported original drugs and innovative medicines.
