The EIA data shows battery electric vehicle sales fell to 6 percent of new light-duty vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, down from 7 percent over the same period a year earlier, even as hybrid electric vehicles continued gaining market share. The New Clean Vehicle Credit and the Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit, both established under the Inflation Reduction Act, expired on September 30, 2025, removing a financial incentive that had previously supported battery electric vehicle purchases. Traditional hybrids were never eligible for those federal credits, which is a distinction that has made them a comparatively stable option for buyers navigating a shifting incentive landscape.
The growing hybrid share of the national vehicle fleet means a larger number of hybrid battery packs will reach the age and mileage range where diagnostics, repair, or replacement typically become relevant to owners. Hybrid battery packs generally begin showing measurable capacity loss after roughly eight to ten years or 100,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the vehicle and driving conditions, and full replacement at a dealership can carry a substantially higher price than independent or mobile service alternatives. Owners are often unaware a battery is nearing the end of its useful life until dashboard warning lights or a noticeable drop in fuel economy appear, and some delay addressing early warning signs because dealership service often requires scheduling an appointment and arranging alternate transportation while the vehicle is in the shop.
